Primary Rules

How Alaska's Primary Works

Alaska uses different primary rules for state/congressional and presidential elections

State / Congressional

Nonpartisan Top-Four
All candidates appear on a single ballot. All registered voters can participate. The top four vote-getters advance to the general election, where ranked-choice voting determines the winner.
How It Works
Works like a top-two primary, but four candidates advance instead of two. In the general election, voters rank the four candidates. If no one wins a majority of first-choice votes, the lowest-ranked candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed.
IVP's Position
An evolution of the top-two model. More candidates in the general election means more competition and more choice for voters. Alaska adopted this system in 2020.

Presidential

Closed Primary
Only voters registered with a political party can vote in that party's primary election. Independent and unaffiliated voters are excluded.
How It Works
Voters must register with a party, often weeks or months before the election, to participate. If you're registered as independent or unaffiliated, you cannot vote in either major party's primary.
IVP's Position
Closed primaries lock millions of independent voters out of the elections that matter most. In many districts, the primary is the only competitive election.
